Frequently asked questions

How is FD maturity calculated?
Maturity uses compound interest: A = P×(1 + r/m)^(m×t), where m is the number of compounding periods per year. Most banks compound FDs quarterly.
Does compounding frequency matter?
Yes. More frequent compounding (monthly vs yearly) gives a slightly higher maturity amount for the same nominal rate.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes, FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS if interest crosses the annual threshold. This calculator shows the pre-tax amount.
Do senior citizens get a higher rate?
Most banks offer senior citizens an extra 0.25–0.50% on FDs. Enter that higher rate to see the difference.
Can I withdraw an FD before maturity?
Usually yes, but banks levy a premature-withdrawal penalty that reduces the effective rate. This tool assumes the deposit is held to maturity.
